Are you experiencing a dry well? The following resources are available to residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

Water Supply Upgrade Program

Starting September 1, 2026, applications for the Water Supply Upgrade Program can be submitted directly to the Municipality.

The Water Supply Upgrade Program offers low-interest financing for systems and improvements that can increase the supply of potable water to homes in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

Eligible water supply upgrades include:

  • Digging a new well.
  • Installing rainwater collection and/or storage systems and equipment, such as cisterns.
  • Installing a well pump, water line and/or electrical connection required to support a water system.
  • Installing systems and equipment designed to improve the supply, use and conservation of potable water.

Financing terms include:

  • A financing period of five years.
  • An interest rate of two per cent.
  • A maximum financing amount equal to the lesser of $20,000 or 15 percent of the assessed value of the qualifying property.

Am I eligible?

  • You own an existing single-unit or two-unit residential property, or the building is owned by a not-for-profit organization.
  • Your property does not have a loan attached to another municipal program, such as Clean Energy Financing or the LaHave River Septic System Program.

In 2025, Council introduced a hardship extension option. If your household meets the income threshold under the Municipality's Property Tax Rebate Program, you may qualify to extend the repayment period to up to 10 years.

Water Coupon Program

During periods of drought in the summer months, the Municipality provides water coupons for drinking and cooking water to municipal residents experiencing dry wells.

Residents can pick up coupons at the Municipal Services Building, 10 Allée Champlain Drive, Cookville, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Electronic coupons can also be requested by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Electronic coupons must be printed before they can be redeemed at participating retailers.

When the program is in effect, it provides 4 L of bottled water per person per day, up to a maximum of four 4 L jugs per household per day. Only households experiencing a shortage of clean water are eligible.

Coupons are valid for one week, and new coupons can be obtained weekly. Each coupon can be exchanged at a participating retailer for one 4 L jug of water. No substitutions are permitted.

Residents of Big and Little Tancook Islands can obtain water coupons and bottled water through the Municipality of the District of Chester and participating Chester-area retailers.

Participating retailers include:

  • Sam's No Frills, Bridgewater
  • The Water Market, Lunenburg
  • Nick's Your Independent Grocer, Mahone Bay
  • New Germany Freshmart
  • Sobeys, Bridgewater

Water Refill Station

The Municipality provides a water refill station near the entrance of the Municipal Services Building at 10 Allée Champlain Drive, Cookville, to assist residents experiencing dry wells. A second station is planned in partnership with the Town of Lunenburg.

The refill station is available during regular business hours, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is provided in addition to the Water Coupon Program.

Residents are responsible for providing and cleaning their own water containers before use. Water quality can be affected by the condition and handling of containers used for transportation and storage.

Showers

When the Water Coupon Program is in effect, residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg can access free showers at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre (LCLC), 135 North Park Street, Bridgewater. Residents can register at the front desk to use the showers.
